In our forest I mainly take birch as firewood. Mainly as that’s what we have most of apart from Norwegian Spruce. The spruce is not so good if you use it in an open fire place as it cracks and spits out glowing pieces all over the floor. So, birch is the thing for us.
We also have some oak, but my father used to say that was “too good” for our fire places and that it released poisoned gas and stuff that wasn’t good for neither us or the boiler. I honestly don’t know about that …
It would be interesting to hear about other experiences here at the forum. What’s your favorite firewood species? - January 31, 2021 at 10:41 pm #10024
It is so great to hear how much thought goes into firewood from other countries. Here we bring home what the sawmill wont take….usually the half rotten junk (Old mountain pine beetle killed pine) and try to burn that in our stoves. Very little planning or thought goes into our firewood pile in northern British Columbia!

Not fussy, so long as it is seasoned.
